Baseball History

Baseball season is here and that means it’s time to enjoy your favorite games at The Court Jester! We love a good baseball game here at The Court Jester, especially when the Mets and the Yankees are involved! During baseball season, when the Mets or Yankees are playing, we are offering up a baseball special for $2 Shorty mugs of Coors Light, Budweiser, Miller Lite, Bud Lite and Yuengling! We are excited about this upcoming season, so to kick it off, we’re going to tell you all about baseball history!
The Beginning
In the early 1800s, Americans began to play baseball, creating their own rules as they went along. By the 1860’s, what we now call baseball was deemed America’s “national pastime.” The game was centered on the English game of rounders, as Americans called it “townball,” “base” or “baseball.”
New York native Alexander Cartwright invented the modern baseball field in 1846 and devised the first set of rules and regulations along with members of his New York Knickerbocker Base Ball Club. These rules were widely accepted and became the standard set of regulations for the modern game of baseball.
The first game in history was held at Elysian Fields in Hoboken, NJ in 1846. At this very first game, the Knickerbockers lost to the New York Baseball Club.
Facts and Trivia
- 1845: The beginning of the systematic game was played with Alexander Cartwright’s published book on the set of baseball rules for the Knickerbocker Club of New York. These rules were widely accepted in the United States.
- 1869: The Cincinnati Red Stockings were the first openly-salaried baseball team.
- 1871: The National Association of Professional Base Ball Players was established as the first professional baseball league.
- 1876: Over 3,000 fans watched the hometown Philadelphia Athletics lose to Boston Red in the first National League game ever played.
- 1878: The Captain of Harvard University Baseball Club, Frederick Thayer, received a patent for a baseball catcher mask.
