We are always looking for ways to improve our menu, and are happy to announce that the fan favorite—guacamole—is coming soon to a Jester near you!

Let’s put the hearts and chocolates behind us and break out the clovers, Guinness and potatoes—that’s right, time to start preparing for St. Patrick’s Day! A little over a month away, the greatest holiday of the year will be here before you know it! But why only have one day to drink Irish beer and enjoy foods from Ireland, when you can visit the Court Jester and get a head start?

Join us in Freehold on February 22 or Aberdeen on February 29, for our Countdown to St. Patrick’s Day Beerfest! Our early St. Patrick’s Day celebration is sure to prepare you for the real deal on March 17!

On the celebration in Freehold, will be feature Guinness, Harp, Smithwicks, Killian’s and Keegans Mother’s Milk on tap. The following week in Aberdeen, our special beers on tap include Killian’s, Smithwick’s, Keegans Mother’s Milk and Guinness!

But before you sip that Guinness, here is some background on that little holiday we know and love as St. Patty’s Day.

St. Patrick is known as the patron saint of Ireland. Patrick was son of a Roman-British army officer, when one day a band of pirates landed in south Wales and kidnapped him along with many others. They sold him into slavery in Ireland, where he was for six years mostly imprisoned. He dreamed of seeing god, who he claimed dictated him to escape through a getaway ship. Finally he escaped and went to Britain, and then France. He joined a monastery and set out for Ireland. There he converted the Gaelic Irish who were mostly Pagans, to Christianity.

The religious feast day was celebrated on March 17, to mark the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over a thousand years. Since St. Patrick’s Day falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Prohibitions during Lent about the consumption of meat were waived, and people would dance, drink and feast on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.

The first St. Patrick’s Day parade surprisingly did not take place in Ireland, but in New York City! Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through the city on March 17, 1762. Along with the opportunity for them to play their music, the parade helped soldiers reconnect to their Irish roots and fellow Irishmen serving in the English army.

Over the next few decades, Irish patriotism flourished among American immigrants, resulting in the creation of societies like the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and the Hibernian Society. Each group would hold annual parades playing bagpipes and drums.

Each year, millions of people gather along the parade route to watch—which takes more than five hours. Today, other United States cities such as Boston and Chicago hold their own parades to celebrate the day!
